Bitcoin is in an important growth stage, hitting record trading highs against fiat currency, breaking google search volume records, gathering (at times laughable) mainstream media coverage, reaching over 20,000 subscribers on /r/bitcoin, and a new era of bitcoin mining is right around the corner. It’s this acceleration of coverage and development in community that will continue to sustain bitcoin’s rise to ubiquity, however, I’d like to address a small but nagging problem that I believe will help keep the momentum going.
I recently did a search for “bitcoin” in the iOS Appstore, not only was I met with far fewer bitcoin apps than expected, I was also surprised to see how many of them were not using up-to-date graphics as their featured images. It bugs me to see over a dozen apps displaying information that is months old. Considering how passionate and creative the bitcoin community is, it bums me out that anyone (especially a bitcoin noob or just someone who wants to dabble) who searches for bitcoin will see information that doesn’t reflect bitcoin’s explosive success. It’s important to keep in mind that you, the early adopters, the developers, the forward thinkers are the ones setting the tone for this growing revolution.
So here’s my plea:
If you are a developer or owner of a bitcoin app on the iOS Appstore, I beg that you keep your app’s marketing material up to date. If bitcoin hits $100 display an image that reflects that!
You might just be responsible for the first step of a newcomer in the bitcoin community, and if that’s truly the case, wouldn’t you want to give the most relevant information to that person?
I think we should be proud of the progress bitcoin has made over the last couple years, we just broke $100, that’s a badge that every single app in the appstore should be wearing proudly.
To help give you an idea of what I mean, take a look at some of these bitcoin apps in the gallery below. Not one of the apps I found displayed a number even remotely current.
Just a note: Obviously the marketing material can’t be changed out every time the price of bitcoin changes (that would be damn near impossible), however, I think it’s important to mark these bitcoin apps with big milestones like our run to $100. What do you say?
